Shambolic drums, slightly distorted guitars and welcoming vocals introduce the wonderfully-named Arty Del Rio with his/their five track EP. Not sure if the band is named after Arty (eg. Brinsley Schwarz) or if this is Arty in solo mode. Don't matter. It's top stuff. There's even a recorder solo on the first track 'Acid' - a catchy song with a great chorus. Well, we were singing along. Music made for Spring. Reminded us of the frantic powerpop of The Mice.
'Angel Mermaid' has a bit of a Tex-Mex (or is it Brazilian?) flavour to it - there's even a bit of an accent on the lead vocals. And there's also a great acoustic bass. Art Del Rio is from Melbourne and all songs were recorded on digital 8 track (sounding pretty good to this analogue snob) with one track recorded on 4 track in Canberra. Now that must be a Canberra tradition. All in all, a great listen. -ND
