Amundsens Flag is a four-piece band comprised of three McCallum brothers - Bronte (16, vocals and guitar), Olly (17, drums), William (18, lead guitar) and their mate Mark ('somewhere in his 20s', bass). The brothers live on a farm that is about 50 kilometres from Ceduna, in South Australia, where Mark lives. Amundsens Flag win the Demo Of The Week Encouragement Award as being such a new band, based out on a farm, we can hear the potential. But we'll be handing over the award to Mrs McCallum for those long-suffering afternoons, weekends and school holidays she has spent hearing her boys rehearse their brand of Silverchair-inspired rock. amundsensflag2
The track that caught our attention was 'Gods Of Rock' - an ode to dead rockers, drugs and girls (we think) sung in that Eddie Vedder voice where singer Bronte crams a hamburger inside his mouth to get the words out, which we think are: 'We don't care about Kurt Cobain, put that shotgun right to his brain, we don't care if Elvis could sing, left his blue suede shoes at Burger King, Jimi Hendrix in a drug-fucked state, (something) into a purple haze, Jim Morrison was a girl's desire, I'm alive today and I could light your fire...we don't care about the Gods of Rock, all we want some chick(s) to suck.' Now we think it said 'suck', sorry guys if it's not! 'Fat Boy' sounds like an early Silverchair song and 'Dolly' is a stoned and jaunty track that features what sounds like a Melodica in amongst the racket and final track 'Crazy For Your Love' comes across as a re-write of 'Fat Boy'. We know it's early days, boys, so keep on driving your Ma and Pa mental with your training sessions. -SH
