Kent Eastwood is a Sydney based singer-songwriter who combines pop, rock and folk styles in his soulful love songs to create a most enjoyable sound. There are eight songs on this taster of a forthcoming album with two tracks - 'World A Better Place' and 'Cinderella' - being the standouts.
Spending a week up in Byron Bay last week, and popping this disc into the player on arrival, the sunny strummy acoustic sounds of Kent Eastwood became a fitting soundtrack to the lazy and easygoing east coast. The first song 'World A Better Place' tells us that being in love may not bring world peace, or save the human race, but on a personal level it feels good. It's simple but it works. And very hummable!
'Someone Like You' features moody piano, shuffling brushed drums and is possibly about unrequited love. 'Make A Difference' has more shuffling drums with the addition of a fuzzed-out electric guitar sitting amongst the acoustic pop.
'Cinderella' could sit proudly amongst the great songs of Half A Cow's very own Bernie Hayes. The way Kent strums the guitar and then launches into the “here it comes again” refrain sounds like he and Bernie kicked around the same songbook back in first form. In fact, Bernie should get Kent to play one of his regular Wednesday nights at the Rose of Australia in Erskineville. It would be a good double.
Overall, there's enough variety in the instruments and some good songwriting here to keep the listener involved with the world of Kent Eastwood. If heartfelt acoustic pop is your bag, then check him out. -ND
