It took a fun, warm self-proclaimed 'folk-pop' Melbourne band to get us back into the Demo Of The Week swing and we can thank The Triangles for doing this. The EP starts off with what would be the summer hit (but we're heading into winter so let's have a hit anyway) 'Let's Replace The Cityscapes' - a beautiful, uplifting song complete with massed choir, glockenspiel, banjo and joyous lyrics that will have you 'la-de-de-da-ing' in no time. Okay, so they're a cute band made up of three girls and two boys who, judging from their website, like to have fun on stage and sing about margarine but the songs are there, the arrangements are well-constructed and the lead vocalist has such an appealing and strong voice (and not that cutesy and breathy style you might expect from a band that plays recorders, accordians and places lettuce on their heads - see pic!) which reminds us of bands like Scotland's Shop Assistants and the Flatmates. triangles2
The second track 'Punctured Lung' is a haunting song that starts with a synth gurgle, acoustic guitar and these curious lyrics: 'punctured lungs will heal, praying to Jesus won't change the way that you feel'. These first two tracks are off The Triangles' forthcoming album Magic Johnson due out in July. And we liked the nod to the M*A*S*H theme ('Suicide Is Painless') in the live version of 'Margarine'. The Triangles are: Julie - keyboards, accordian / Matt - guitar, ukulele, harmonica, vocals / Eleanor - vocals, percussion, melodica / Katherine - guitar, vocals, recorder / Robert - drums, bass, guitar. They have been playing live around Melbourne for the last couple of years and their last album Red Panda received airplay on 3RRR. We here at Half A Cow will be looking forward to their new one. -ND
