Sometimes when hearing someone's music you can get a real sense of the artist and their whole being; their home, surroundings, life and loves. Jon Duncan and his expansive 17-tracker Where Your Treasure Is is one such cd. The album is full of songs about his life in the hills of Tasmania with, we presume, his partner and young child and the booklet contains lots of photos of his idyllic surroundings, family and (we presume again) his and his partner's own artwork. The music, which is mainly acoustic-based, jumps around from folk songs, acapella spirituals ('Water I Drink'), Smudge-style short 'n' sweet pop songs ('Historiography'), ballads ('A Blessing For You'), even raunchy pub rock ('The Single-Guy Two-Step Truth'). Jon Duncan
Keeping the 'I'm-doing-this-for-my-own-enjoyment' ethos in mind, the spoken intro "Honey, I'm home! You lucky thing" in 'Yr Home Is Where Yr Happy' works well, despite being cute and a bit cheesy. It's not all lovey-dovey, though. There's even a song about a depressed and suicidal girl called 'She Quoted Dostoevsky". The lyrics in this song are extremely interesting. Sounds like he met a real crazy on his travels. You get the feeling that Jon has made this cd for his, and his friends', enjoyment rather than to get a record deal - for which we are glad he has sent it to us - as we enjoyed listening to it as well. We hope you're still enjoying your wonderful life tucked away somewhere in Tasmania's wilderness, Jon! -ND
